Little Free Libraries

We are back in San Diego and patiently waiting for the Los Angeles consulate to give us an appointment date. In the meantime, I have been voraciously reading to provide distraction and avoid impatience. So, in order to find reading material I have been directing our walks to the various free libraries around the neighbourhood. This is one of the two closest ones to Kobayashi's house and the only one so far that we've seen that comes with a reading bench.

The second nearby library is tucked in on left on what we call the Port Jackson Fig street.

I'm not sure why they tucked it in, because the visibility is not ideal. And being visible helps the traffic and the turnover of the books. The little foot path is very cute though.

If we go beyond the distance Kobayashi is willing to walk with us, we can reach two more libraries. This one I called the Cocker Spaniel Library, which confused Ira to no end. But it made sense to me because when we first discovered it, a young boy came out of the house with his dog and started chatting with us for the first part of his walk. As you might have guessed, the dog was a spaniel, a King Charles Cavalier, to be exact. What I later found out is that although the King Charles Cavalier is a spaniel, it's not a cocker spaniel, which is a larger, sporting type breed. So maybe I should rename this the Cavalier Library.

The Cavalier Library is more visible than the Jackson Fig Library. Though you never can tell how much traffic a library will get.

And finally we have the End of El Camino Library, which is named for the it's location at the end of the El Camino De Teatro street. This one has a lot of books, though predominantly children's books.

The next day my plan was to walk to newest one that David discovered at the bottom of La Jolla Mesa Drive. It's a tough walk up and down a steep hill, but you can't beat the view.

The living wall along the way is starting to bloom, so pretty!

We almost turned around before finding it the first time, it was tucked in amongst the hedges and partially hidden from the direction we came from. We were all the way at the bottom of the hill and had officially left La Jolla and were now in Pacific Beach. But despite that, it was a great location and full of books.

This one, Ira noticed, had a plaque attached with information about the Free Libraries. He thought maybe there might be a map on the website that would tell us where there were more.

We would check when we got back, because now we had to climb back up that big hill! I did stop to take a photo of these cacti, aren't they pretty?

And one last breather before we reach home. A stop to take a photo of this front door and matching mailbox.

When we got back home, Ira scoped out the website and indeed found a map showing us where to find other libraries. There was only one other within striking distance of Kobayashi's house, so we made a plan to walk to that one the next day.

With a new route comes a new neighborhood to discover. Our first new street was beautifully lined with blooms. While I stopped to take the photo, Ira noticed something was moving amongst the flowers.

A closer look revealed.....chickens, fancy La Jolla chickens LOL.

This part of La Jolla was really pretty. Beautiful gates...

And pretty doorways....

This one makes me think a hobbit might live there.

And finally a few different mailboxes.....

Ira really loved the plant growing on top of this one.

We did finally make it to the Free Library and it was jam-packed with books. It took all my will power not to take more than one. But I made a note to come back as soon I had another to swap.

What is it they say? So many books, so little time.

A dopo!
