Twilight by Day, Massa by Night

Ira's burger creation

I know you're all wondering how the burgers went last night LOL. It looks good, right? It tasted as good as it looks. Ira was very proud of his burger, and rightly so!

Burgers were also very appropriate since yesterday was Superbowl Sunday! The game started at half past midnight Italy time. There were two Italian commentators, off-camera versus on. During the few commercial breaks, instead of the star-studded and sometimes entertaining ads, they alternated between a still shot of the inside of the Las Vegas stadium and replays of previous footage. Ira tapped out after the first quarter.

We considered driving to Follonica today then taking a train to Pisa, but after looking at the train schedule decided we would rather sleep in and drive. This way we could stop by Volterra on the way back. Twilight fans know this town as the home of the Volturi and the location of the second book.

On that Twilight note, for those of you who don't know, in 2022-23 we lived in St. Helens, which is where they shot scenes from the first Twilight movie. In fact, Bella's house is now an airbnb if you want the full experience. Talk about a lucrative rental, click the link if you're interested.

So we made it to Pisa and we circled the square to check out the tower. There were a lot of tourists!

But it was still pretty cool to see in person. Melissa said it was worth taking a look at the cemetery, but it was only open on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Volterra was cool. It had a different feeling from Pisa altogether and even Pienza. We went inside the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta). It dates back to 1120 but was heavily modified during the Renaissance era in 1584.

Which explains the heavily gilded Renaissance ceiling, so beautiful.

It was closed for the winter, but we were able to view the Roman Amphitheater and archaeological site  from up top.

Built in the 1st century AD, it sits on an old Etruscan site and is one of Italy's most finest and well preserved. We'll have to go back when we can wander around. In just over an hour we were back in Massa with time to walk to the grocery store and snap the final pic of the night. This is looking down Via Moncini under the moonlight on the way back to our apartment.

Tomorrow we have our meeting at Interalia with Niccolo and Serena. We'll let you know how it goes!

Ciao, a dopo!

P.S. If you are a true Twilight fan, you will know that although Volterra was the home of the Volturri, the movie scenes were actually filmed in Montepulciano. It is apparently a pretty town to visit, but not to live....it's too expensive baby!
